There are four factors that influence purchase decisions that are somewhat intertwined.

The first one is pretty easy right, you needs something, you go out and buy it right?  A lot of the bigger blue chip companies support your needs purchases – toilet paper, food, gas, etc ( all those consumer staples companies ).  Its not as simple as it sounds, because although they have the staples you NEED TO BUY they still also have a lot of competition.  They spend tons of money on branding, sales, distribution r & d and fighting for shelf space to stay top of mind with consumers.

The second, WANTS BASED is a little more complicated, although needs based purchases do play on our emotions slightly, there is a big emotional factor when it comes to wants.  You don’t really need the latest and greatest smartphone with the over sized screen, or the newest car model with cameras at every angle and self driving capabilities.

Than, you have PRICE and EMOTION, which can almost be considered sub-factors that fall under needs and wants when it comes to actually pulling the trigger on a purchase.  The price is just so good you cant walk away  ( “wow, I cant pass this deal up” ) OR the seller has painted such a good picture in your mind, that you cant  walk away.

Here’s an interesting tidbit, sometimes people will spend more than they want to spend or can afford to spend on a need OR want when there is an emotional factor involved.  This where intertwining comes into place with emotions coming into play at almost every level.

So lets go back to PAINTING A PICTURE, its a big factor, why?  The picture you paint in the mind of potential customers will influence purchase decision and determine whether the asking price is inline with the product or service offered. That’s why you always hear things like “you get what you pay for” or ” the lowest price is not always the best. “

These are preconceived value expressions that have been embedded into consumers from their past experiences and experiences of their inner circle.  They understand the price / value formula and that is why its very important to take these components into consideration when implementing a pricing strategy.

online war ecommerce marketplace

Marketplaces Vs Ecomm – who’s winning the online war?

There are two schools of thought for Small Businesses or online retailers looking to push product through the web…

So what’s the correct answer?

Should you be advertising products on Marketplaces or an ecommerce website and what the heck is the difference?

Here is the MAJOR difference and why most people are doing both.

Your own ecommerce website is great, but you are limited to driving people there directly from outside sources such as search engines, social media, or content creation.

Marketplaces bring in people from all walks of life, searching for all different things – the STUMBLE UBON effect – no pun intended.

What does that mean for your business, product, or service that you are advertising?

UNITENDED PURCHASES

The truth, not all people want to buy from just one business, they want CHOICE, COMPETITION, VALUE, INFORMATION – the marketplace provided all these things for consumers and drives down PRICE!

Most Marketplaces or classified websites are very keen when it comes to indexing your ads with keywords, and you can control those terms for SEO purposes making you appear on even more search engines.

An ecommerce website is a larger commitment for the business owner, while posting on classified sites or in marketplaces many times can be free and fast exposure to s slew of people seeking what you are selling – where else do you find that???????????????????

why u mad pissed off angry

Do I have your attention?  Good, because if I don’t I have not done my job and you will never read this.

Here is the ugly truth folks…

To succeed in business you need to piss a ton of people off.

You need to rise above obscurity – In this world there is so much NOISE that you need to take things to the extreme to get your message heard.

What does this mean for your business????

  • An absurd amount of emails
  • An obscene amount of calls
  • A ludicrous amount of tweets
  • A ridiculous amount of posts EVERYWHERE!
  • Tons of voicemail’s
  • Repeat
  • Repeat
  • Repeat

Why are successful people hated???… Because they are heard!

Success breeds haters and the more haters you have the more success you will have.

Don’t feel bad sending 10 tweets in a row or 5 repeat tweets or calling the same client or prospect 10 times…

The people who get annoyed by your 5th tweet weren’t going to use your product anyway, and the client or prospect you call on the 10th time… if they are successful or worthy of your business they will appreciate the follow-up.

If you have something good you need to let people know about it, they are busy and they don’t care until you make them care….

Get as many haters as you can and piss off as many people as you can, that is how you get heard not by worrying that someone will get annoyed from that extra phone call or unfollow you on the social network… those people will never become your clients anyway….

selling product vs selling a brand

All too often businesses are tempted to focus on the product they have for sale, rather than their brand…

So what are you really selling?

-Sellers of products are short lived…

-Sellers of brands create brand loyalty and relationships…

So why the focus on product?

-A product you can touch and feel and explain

-A brand has to be imagined and massaged

It’s easy to say, “we have the best and cheapest trinket on the market,”and yes, in some industries that works, but those are not the industries you want to be in or the customers you want.

A customer focused only on price will shop anywhere and everywhere to get the best price, they don’t care about your brand, your yelp rating, or how many likes you have on facebook… Most likely they aren’t coming back to you, because the next time around it’s likely they will find it cheaper somewhere else  – Understandable.

BUT – what if your branding resonates with customers, so they won’t go somewhere else, in fact, they refuse to deal with anyone else? Does this happen?

Have you ever had such a good experience somewhere, that you were actually happy to pay more, and you couldn’t wait to tell everyone you knew about the experience – maybe it was a level of professionalism, an attention to detail you have never seen, a level of expertise in the respective field you have never encountered, ease of use of the product – whatever it was it just sat well with you.

Folks, this part of your brand, and a big part – your mission statement as a business, as to what is important to you, to deliver to your customers and stick to in your business plan, day in and day out.

Your brand is more than your logo or tag-line, you see these are just eye catching tools that represent your mission statement as a business.

When you have a powerful mission statement that truly differentiates you, it will impact your brand and your customers –  You won’t just be selling a product, you will be selling a brand.

Internet-Marketing

There are various methods for helping your business get off the ground, but one of the best ways in today’s market has got to be the internet. Using the internet for a marketing campaign can be one of the easiest ways to get your business going. In fact, there are several websites set up for just thing type of thing. One of the best sites to sell online has a great idea that allows you to start a social group of people called a circle. These circles are based around a concept or topic, and this topic could be all about your products. The best thing of all is it is entirely free! How does it all work? It’s pretty simple, so let’s check out how it works.

First Things First

Decide what kind of topic you want the group to be about. This is obviously going to whatever it is you plan on trying to sell. Let’s call it “Wool Mittens” for the sake of this example. Once you create your circle you can then share it with anyone you want. This can be done in any number of ways, you could email it to any customers you already have, share it with friends and family or post it on a social media site. Whichever method you choose to use is up to you, and once people start joining they can start sharing it as well. This means that they will start expanding your group to the folks that they know, and this can continue on and on.

An Ever Expanding Resource

As people continue to join, you will have more ears listening to you as you try to sell your products and more voices sharing whatever you are posting. You can use this tool in a variety of ways. You can bounce ideas around, offer sales or announce new products being released. If you really want, you could just have a discussion about mittens and see what people say. This resource can be used to whatever ends you really want, and it’s still free of charge.

The benefits don’t stop there. You have the option of joining other circles that aren’t your own, and can begin using those resources to your advantage as well. This is also at no cost to you. You can surely see by now how this site is one of the best for you to advertise your products with, and how these little social circles can give you a great advantage at no cost.

social-media-marketing platforms

The Internet is a large group of interconnected websites, and people. This can be used to your advantage when it comes to advertising your small business. Using websites that deal in social media is a great way we advertise my business for free. By having so many people at your fingertips, you may find that their voices will carry your message pretty far, and at no cost to you at all. This can be a great asset to any company just getting started, or even to one that has been established for a while. Aside from joining one of these social media sites there are plenty of other options available to you as well. There are pages that specialize in bringing individuals together to form groups based on like-minded interests for example. These can also be used for the benefit of advertising. Let’s take a look at how something like that works.

A Social Circle Of Contacts

It all starts with a basic topic of interest. This topic can be anything you like. For example if you own a small company that involves selling toy dolls, then you could make a circle about toy dolls and talk about your company as a great place to buy them. You can then share this circle with anyone you like. As others begin joining your group they can begin sharing it as well. This can be done in a variety of ways, including peer to peer or via social media sites. As the group grows, so does your access to people who enjoy toy dolls. This is a simple way of reaching out to customers who may enjoy the products you are trying to sell, and it has the added benefit of those individuals sharing your website with people that they know. The best part of it all is that it is entirely free of cost.

Benefits For Buyers And Sellers

By having a topic that many folks will enjoy, you will be able to speak about your products to a group of potential customers. These potential customers will also be able to start conversations about your topic, and this can give you a good insight in to their needs. This can give you the information for making decisions about your product lines in the future. You can also directly post up sales or any kind of promotions you may have going on. In turn, all of that information will get shared across your new network of potential customers.

Small Business Can’t Run On Fumes - Passion Will Only Take You So Far Without The Purse

The expenses and overhead that accompany making a Small Business become big, are becoming bigger and bigger day by day, making it increasingly difficult to compete and pass on the types of generational businesses we were used to seeing pass through 10 and 20 years ago… The ones that grew into Walmarts, Targets, McDonalds and other behemoths.

These big players have deep pockets, which affords them pricing power, volume discounts, unlimited advertising budgets; giving them national branding, exposure and presence.

Even harder for the small guy….Red Tape, hoops to jump through, bureaucracy equals a higher cost of doing business, more time spent with paperwork and attorneys and less time spent on business, the days of doing business on a handshake are over unfortunately, for good…

Small Business can’t run on fumes, they need sufficient capital to run smoothly, this is the biggest challenge – Passion will only take you so far without the purse, because there is a lot of downtime before you can build a successful business, you may need to try many different strategies, before you find the right one – and this trial and error can be costly without revenue or profits.  As passionate as business owners are, when the bills start coming in and the lights need to stay on, they may move on….

Luckily, Alternative Online Lending Solutions such as Kabbage are now available, making it much easier for Small Businesses to access capital.  These types of sites, cut out the red tape, with instant lending decisions, no paperwork, no faxing, no unreturned phone calls, no waiting weeks for bad news…. They are giving it to you strait forward and fast – This is why they are gaining popularity in the Small Business Arena.

Small Business, Big Dilemma

There is a big dilemma facing Small Business:

How do I advertise my business?

The internet is one big advertisement right?

Wherever you go you are plastered with ads, popups, email blasts etc… you don’t want to see the ads? Than pay me you are told.  You are profiled based on your demographic, geographic, shopping history and many more traits that advertisers can find about you…

The big question, is any of this doing anything for the average Small Business owner’s advertising efforts, the answer is most likely a BIG NO! This is the Dilemma –

Most of the time you will not see ads for mom and pops or local dry cleaners, or your etsy shop owner or ebay seller – the ads you see will be from the bigger players with the bigger budgets…

So where are the Small Businesses turning to online??

1) They are told you need a Facebook Page, very true – In today’s society you need a Social Presence, Some customers will like to check your facebook page and its good for the search engine ranking as well.. How much SALES will an actual small business derive from a facebook page, its to be determined and depends on the nature of the business and following you can create about your business, product, or service.  A facebook paid ad will certainly ramp up views of the ad and allow you to target a specific demographic, but can be costly for a Small Business with no to Small Advertising budget.

2)Website – This one is purely obvious, but with millions of websites, unless you are promoting it, you are just like a storefront business on a backstreet without a sign, and not many, if any at all customers will come inside.

3)SEO & Pay per click – Here’s a big one many people are touting, and its definitely big if you can take advantage of it.  Again, this sort of becomes an advertising budget game, because the bigger players or players with more clout, can sometimes own the market or the 1st 2 pages (which are the only pages that matter).  This should definitely not be ignored, because these are the customers that are looking for you – hot and ready buyers vs passive buyers that you may find on a facebook.

4)Marketplace / Classified Websites – Here’s one that the Smaller Businesses are certainly turning to for instant exposure.  The key here is instant exposure, the power to be able to place an ad, many times for free into a crowd of people seeking what you are selling is what is appealing to many Small Business Owners, online sellers and advertisers.  Another nice part about a marketplace is you can think of it as a an online mall and a website as a one off store… So the nice thing about the mall (marketplace) is you get the traffic, which can sometimes result in unintended purchases.

Now you can see the big Dilemma facing Small Business, where do I turn, where do I promote my business??

There are lots of options, but if you don’t have a big budget marketplace and classified websites are a great place to start, to gain some instant exposure and awareness and point people back to your website.
