There are four factors that influence purchase decisions that are somewhat intertwined.

The first one is pretty easy right, someone needs something, they need it right?  A lot of the bigger blue chip companies support your needs purchases – toilet paper, food, gas, etc ( all those consumer staples companies ).  Its not as simple as it sounds, because although they have the staples people NEED TO BUY they still also have a lot of competition.  They spend tons of money on branding, sales, distribution r & d and fighting for shelf space to stay top of mind with consumers.

The second, WANTS BASED is a little more complicated, although needs based purchases do play on our emotions slightly, there is a big emotional factor when it comes to wants.  You don’t really need the latest and greatest smartphone with the over sized screen, or the newest car model with cameras at every angle and self driving capabilities.

Than, you have PRICE and EMOTION, which can almost be considered sub-factors that fall under needs and wants when it comes to actually pulling the trigger on a purchase.  The price is just so good you cant walk away  ( “wow, I cant pass this deal up” ) OR the seller has painted such a good picture in your mind, that you cant  walk away.

Here’s an interesting tidbit, sometimes people will spend more than they want to spend or can afford to spend on a need OR want when there is an emotional factor involved.  This where intertwining comes into place with emotions coming into play at almost every level.

So lets go back to PAINTING A PICTURE, its a big factor, why?  The picture you paint in the mind of potential customers will influence purchase decision and determine whether the asking price is inline with the product or service offered. That’s why you always hear things like “you get what you pay for” or ” the lowest price is not always the best. “

These are preconceived value expressions that have been embedded into consumers from their past experiences and experiences of their inner circle.  They understand the price / value formula and that is why its very important to take these components into consideration when implementing a pricing strategy.

So wait a minute I thought, If I’m reading this correctly, a sentence, words, phrases, letters or anything for that matter, that is bold, will stand out more?

Why are people so attracted to BOLD?

Here’s the catch and I think I figured it out, Seriously!

Yes, being bold can be bad, you might scare a few people away with your boldness, BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUTTTTTT…..

Lets face it, their are no real experts on oil prices, as we know that no one predicted this sharp fall from over $100 a barrel to $65 a barrel.  None of us, besides some investors and countries that depend on high oil prices are complaining.  So from a layman’s perspective here are some reasons for the fall that I think have been building up for years and are now coming to fruition.

1. Smarter Consumers – Lets face it, with all the technology at our finger tips consumers are just so much smarter.  Yes, we now figure things out without always having to call on other people.  We have apps that tell us shorter routes, where the cheapest gas prices are, how to do things at home ( DIY ) without driving to the store to buy stuff we don’t need ( i.e. plastics that are made of oil etc).  Being an all around smarter consumer we allocate less dollars to oil backed commodities whether it be gasoline or other products or services produced with oil or a component thereof.

2. Lack of Demand – Do to some of the above mentioned factors as well as alternative energy sources there is less demand today than there was previously.  We all know what happens when demand decreases across the supply chain.

3. Alternative Energy Sources – Solar, wind, hybrid vehicles, natural gas and even ocean energy are all on the rise and are starting to be adopted.  Especially solar – if you look around your town, you will see many more homes going solar, it is becoming extremely affordable and the cost / benefit equation is really starting to make sense.

I would argue that the combination of these three fundamental changes in society, along with other global forces I wont get into here are driving the price of oil down.  The key word is fundamental, and I’m making the argument that this is something that will keep oil prices low for years to come.
